[牡 丹]



奈良時代(710〜)中国から入ってきました。花の中の王とされ、百獣の王ライオンと組み合わされて用いられてきました。気高く華やかな図柄は貴族に愛されました。

[Peony]

A peony was brought from China in Nara Era (710-784). It is considered to be the king of flowers, and is often drawn in combination with a lion. Its noble and elegant figure was loved by aristocrats.

[歩]



将棋の駒で歩兵の意味。将棋はチェスに似たゲームで、800年頃中国から入りその後独自の改良が加えられ、現代では世界中に愛好家がいます。この“歩”という駒は敵陣奥まで行けたら“金”に変わるという地味でありながら着実に歩む素晴らしい駒です。

[Pawn]

The "pawn" is a kind of piece of Shogi, meaning "foot soldier." Shogi, a game similar to chess, was introduced from China in around 800, and improved uniquely in Japan. Now there are fans all over the world. The pawn is a humble piece, but it is a wonderful piece which can become "gold general" if it reaches the enemy's back after stepping forward steadily.

[福来たる]



これは文字遊びです。福来たるの意味は、Fortune has come.です。fu ku ki ta ruという発音を違う文字に置き換えて絵で表しました。ひねってあるので日本人でもなかなか分からないようです。

[Fuku kitaru]

This is difficult to understand because of changes in the readings of Chinese characters. "Fuku Kitaru" means "Fortune has come." The original pronunciation of "fu-ku-ki-ta-ru" was transposed to a different set of characters and then expressed with pictures. This is difficult to understand even for the Japanese!

[鬼は外 福は内]



これは文字の遊びです。意味はFortune in.Devils out!です。O ni wa so to Fu ku wa u chiという発音を違う文字に置き換えて絵で表しました。

[Oni-wa-soto. Fuku-wa-uchi]

This is a problem of a character play. “Oni-wa-soto, Fuku-wa-uchi” means “Fortune in! Divils out!” The original pronunciation of “Oni-wa-soto. Fuku-wa-uchi” was transposed to a different set of characters and expresed with pictures.

縄文時代から家畜として飼われてきた犬は、日本書紀、古事記などにも登場し、身近な動物としていつの時代にも愛されてきました。又、安産祈願や子供の魔よけ等、お守り、縁起物、郷土玩具としても親しまれています。

[Dog]

Dogs, which have been kept as domestic animals since the Jomon Era (12000BC-2400BC), come into "Nihonshoki" and "Kojiki" and have been long beloved as a familiar animal. A dog is also familiar to us as a symbol of a prayer for a safe delivery, a charm for children against evil, an amulet, a good-luck talisman, or a folk toy.

能舞台の奥の板壁(鏡板)には老松が必ず描かれています。松は常緑樹で長寿から、めでたさの象徴であり、又古来より神の宿る依り代として神聖視されてきました。

[A Couple of Pine Trees]

A pine tree is drawn on the back end plate (wood siding wall) of a Noh drama stage without fail. Since pine trees are evergreen and long lived, they have been a symbol of auspiciousness, and regarded with reverence as a dwelling place of gods.

[波に朝日]


日本では元旦に初日の出を拝む風習があります。国名を日の本(日の出る本)とし、太陽をお天道様と言ってきました。朝日の絵や名前は縁起物として多岐にわたって用いられています。

[Morning Sun behind the Waves]

Japanese people have a custom to worship the sunrise on New Year's Day. The name of the country, "Nippon" is written as "Home of the Sun," meaning "the place where the sun rises," and people have been calling the sun "Lord of Heaven". A picture of the morning sun, or the characters which represent it, are variously used as a good-luck talisman.
