[猫]



奈良時代(8世紀)頃日本に来たとされていますが、神秘性からか、吉祥のイメージに及ばず、伝統文様としては残っていません。しかし近代になり猫が手をあげてお金を招く、お客を招くという招き猫ブームが起こり、吉祥の縁起物になりました。

[Cat]

It has been said that cats arrived in Japan in Nara Era (8th century), but perhaps because of its mystic nature, cats have been beneath the image of auspiciousness, and therefore, no traditional motifs of cats have been found. However, in the modern age, there has been a beckoning cat boom that it brings in money and customers as it raises its hand. As a result, cats have become a symbol of a good-luck talisman.

[鯛]



日本では尾頭付きの鯛は、華やかな赤色と、身が崩れず味もよしその名のごとく“めでたい”魚として人生の祝いの日には必ず御膳に上る魚です。また吉祥の印として宗教行事や、縁起ものとしても用いられています。

[Sea Bream]

In Japan, a whole sea bream is served on a celebratory day of one’s life as a “festive” fish because of its gorgeous red color, good preservation of shape, and great taste. Seen as an auspicious symbol, a sea bream appears in religious events and is used as a bringer of good-luck.

[鯱鉾(しゃちほこ)]



寺院や城の天守、大棟(屋根の最も高い水平部分)の両端に付けた装飾の一種で、形は頭が竜、虎、体が魚の想像上の霊獣(吉兆の獣)で、火事の際は水を噴き出すとされます。

[Shachihoko Statue]

A Shachihoko Statue is a kind of ornament placed at each end of a castle keep or a top of a roof. It is an imaginary holy animal (as a fortunate omen) with the head of a dragon and the body of a fish and is believed to spew water in case of fire.

日本の絶滅危惧種シリーズ
[イリオモテヤマネコ]



イリオモテヤマネコは、世界でも沖縄県西表島にだけ生息している野生の猫です。1997年に国の特別天然記念物に指定されましたが、今ではその数は100頭ほどで環境省の絶滅危惧IA類(絶滅の危険性が極めて高い種)とされています。

[Iriomote Wildcat]

The Iriomote wildcat is a kind of wild cats living only in Iriomote Island, Okinawa in the world. It was designated as a special national natural treasure in 1997. Only 100 Iriomote wildcats are living now and they have been classified further into Critically Endangered (Species perched on edge of extinction) by the Ministry of the Environment.

[アカウミガメ]



アカウミガメは世界中の熱帯、温帯の海域に分布し、日本は北太平洋における唯一の産卵地です。近年開発に伴う自然破壊によって産卵場所が減りまた環境悪化の為、子亀の海への帰還が困難になっています。

[Loggerhead Turtle]

The loggerhead turtle are distributed in the temperate and tropical regions in the world. Japan is the only spawning region in the North Pacific. Recently, the nature destruction due to development has been diminishing their spawning sites, and habitat degradation has made it more and more difficult for baby tortoises to go into the sea after they have hatched from the eggs.

[ゲンゴロウ]




かつては水田、池、沼等身近な所にいて、源五郎という和名からもわかるように親しまれていた水生昆虫ですが農薬、水質汚染、開発等生息環境の破壊によりその数は激減し、日本にいる130種類ほどのゲンゴロウ科の内、数種類は絶滅危惧種に指定され、危機的状況にあります。

[Gengoro (Japanese Water Beetle)]

Gengoro, a Japanese water beetle is a kind of aquatic insets living near the people, such as in water-laden paddies, ponds and bogs. Its Japanese name “Gengoro” (one of man’s names) shows how familiar it has been to Japanese people. However, recently, its population has greatly decreased due to destruction of habitats caused by pesticides, water pollution, or developments. In fact, several kinds of them among 130 kinds in total living in Japan are designated as an endangered species and are now in a critical situation.

ジャイアントパンダ(大熊猫)はその可愛らしい姿で世界中の人々に愛されています。
中華人民共和国のごく限られた地域に生息し、近年生息環境の悪化から絶滅危惧種に指定され、第一級保護動物として大切にされています。

[Panda]

Giant pandas are loved all over the world for their cute bodies. They are living in very limited areas of China. Because of the recent habitant degradation, they have been designated as an endangered species and protected as a primary protected animal.

[オオサンショウウオ]



世界最大の両生類。3000万年前から生息し、生きた化石と言われています。
また、日本固有種として国の特別天然記念物に指定されています。
近年、生息環境の悪化から絶滅の恐れがあるとされる準絶滅危惧種に指定されています。

[Osanshouo (Japanese giant salamander)]

The Osanshouo is the largest amphibian in the world. They have been living for 30 million years on the earth, and are called living fossils. They are designated as a Special National Treasure, being peculiar to Japan. Recently, they were designated as a quasi endangered species as being a threatened fish because of the habitat degradation.

日本の絶滅危惧種シリーズ
[アマミノクロウサギ]



奄美大島と、徳之島にしか生存していない、国の特別天然記念物です。
黒毛、短い耳、鋭い爪で、一般的な兎とはちょっと違った、愛嬌のある姿です。
ハブ退治のため人為的に持ち込まれたマングースなどによりその数が激減し、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。

[Amami Rabbit]

The Amami rabbit is a national natural treasure, living only in Amami island and Tokunoshima island.
Having a black hair, short ears and sharp claws, the Amami rabbit looks a little different from ordinary rabbits. It looks lovable. The number of Amami rabbit has been greatly decreasing because of mongooses that were brought there for the purpose of getting rid of habu. The Amami rabbit is now designated as an endangered species.
