The Shiba Inu is loved for its brave figure with pricked ears and a curled tail, and also for its obedience to masters. Recently, Shiba Inus have become popular in the U.S. and Europe. 古代オリエントで王を守る獅子がシルクロードを経て東アジアへ渡り、災いから町や人々を守る霊獣となりました。沖縄ではシーサーと呼ばれ、焼き物で出来た像が家々の門、屋根、室内等に置かれ、魔除けとして人々に親しまれています。

Lions were a guard to protect kings in the ancient Orient, but after passing through the Silk Road and entering into the Eastern Asia, they have become a holy animal to keep people and towns safe from disasters and evils. Lions are called “shisa” in Okinawa, where people love them and put their pottery statues at the gates, on the roofs, or in the rooms of their houses to ward off evil spirits.

江戸時代、蝦蟇ガエルの油を混ぜた軟膏売りの物売り口上が話題を呼びました。今でも、落語や大道芸で「がまの油売り」として演じられています。

[モモンガ紋]



リス科の動物で、前肢と後肢の間の皮膜で滑空します。森林伐採により希少種に認定され、ニホンモモンガを絶滅危惧種に指定している都道府県もあります。

Pteromys momongas are sciurid. They glide among trees using the webs between front legs and back legs. Their population has been seriously decreased due to habitat loss by deforestation. Some of the prefectures in Japan designate them as endangered species.

[カブトガニ]



2億年前のジェラ紀からほとんど変わらない姿をしているカブトガニは、「生きた化石」という言葉が初めて使われました。日本では近年生息環境の悪化により数は激減し、絶滅危惧種に指定され、また繁殖地は天然記念物に指定されています。

[Tachypleus tridentatus (a kind of Horseshoe crab)]

It has kept almost unchanged since the Jurassic period, which started around 200 million years ago, and the expression “living fossil” was first used for it. Its population has recently been decreasing dramatically due to the habitat degradation and it is designated as an endangered species. In addition, its breeding places are designated as natural resources.

[イカリモンハンミョウ紋]



石川県の天然記念物で、背の模様が錨のように見えるハンミョウ科の虫です。近年、生息環境の悪化から数は激減し、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。

[Abroscelis anchoralis (a kind of Tiger beetle)]

It is one of natural resources in Ishikawa-prefecture. It is a kind of Tiger beetle having a pattern that looks like an anchor on back. Its population has recently been decreasing dramatically due to the habitat degradation and it is designated as an endangered species.
